Theory is important to social science research as theory supports knowledge creation, application and extension. In natural science and engineering, researchers often work within an established theoretical paradigm and are not so aware of their theoretical assumptions. However, in social science, researchers can adopt different theories and frameworks which they can easily modify and extend. Thus, social science knowledge is more malleable as different theories will frame research results differently to create different knowledge. In this talk, the speaker will discuss his effort in developing a user study of a novel user interface (a knowledge graph visualization interface) and how he “dreams up” theories and frameworks to support analysis of the data and presentation of the research results in an academic paper.
