Professional Internship and International Experience
Our institute encourages students to take part in international exchange activities and professional internships. Regarding the internship, students are required to participate as intern at LIS –related service institutions or industry before graduation, in order to better understand the professional needs at work, and explore more career opportunities. As for the international exchange activities, our institute has created various international channels of academic exchange, equipping our students with diverse international learning experience. For example, we continue to partner with the Southern College in Malaysia, sending an average of 10 students abroad to serve and learn at various libraries of junior and senior high schools in Malaysia every summer.
Meanwhile, we also work with the libraries at the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee (UWM) and the State University of New York-Albany (SUNY) to build up professional internship channels, offering students opportunities to intern at the academic libraries in the U.S. Two students will be interning at SUNY-Albany in 2009, and another four will be going to UWM for their internship in 2010. Besides, we also sign the Memorandum of Understanding with several LIS programs in the U.S., including the School of Communication, Information & Library Science at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, and the School of Information Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, in hoping to co-develop and launch various projects together, including distance learning, students exchange, as well as independent study.
In addition to offering students the diverse learning opportunities mentioned above, we also provide our students scholarships for traveling overseas, and attending conferences abroad. We have already made students successfully attend the ALA, IFLA, ICADL, IASL, ASIS&T, and so on. Through the various academic and scholarship opportunities mentioned above, our students could obtain various international training opportunities, thus accumulating more international exposure.
Graduate Placements
Ever since the Institute was established in 2002, our graduates mainly work in the following 3 industry sectors, which are private businesses, government agencies, as well as educational and research institutions.
- Private Businesses:
Internet service industry (e.g. Yahoo!Kimo, WWWINS Consulting, Gamania Taiwan, etc.) and information system service industry (e.g. HyWeb, TBMC, eLand Technologies, etc.) account for the majority of private businesses.
- Government Agencies:
They mainly refer to libraries, including academic libraries (e.g. National Taiwan University, National Taiwan Normal University, National Cheng Kung University, National Chiao Tung University, National Taiwan University of Science and Technology, National Taiwan Ocean University, etc.), public libraries (e.g. Taipei Public Library, National Taichung Library, Hsing Tian Kong Library, etc.), as well as special libraries (e.g. Computer Information Service Center at III, medical libraries, etc.).
- Educational and Research Institutions:
Graduates mainly work as research assistants for projects such as the National Digital Archives Program, as well as at institutions like Academia Sinica and various departments at universities.
- Advanced Studies:
Asides from the industries mentioned above, there is a small portion of our graduates serving as teachers at elementary and junior high schools. Some graduates plan to pursue advanced studies, applying for Ph.D. programs both Taiwan and in abroad, with the expectation to conduct academic research, or serve as senior managers at enterprises, leveraging the level of LIS research and social impact.
